Greetings from the President

“The Year of the Monkey” has been another happy year for the VCCAA. The planned cultural events, including the Cultural Night - “Becoming American: The Chinese Experience in Ventura County” - at Oxnard Pacifica High School Performing Arts Center, which was well-attended and enjoyed by a full-house of audience of over 750.

A wise person once said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it … is like wrapping a gift and not giving it.”

Let me be a grateful person to unwrap a gift of “Thank you” to VP Tyrus Goo and Vivian Goo, Secretary Andy Little, Treasurer Judy Schechter, Membership and Newsletter editors Lloyd Ho, Lisa Fu, Sharon Chiang, all the Board members and all the friends of the VCCAA for the enthusiastic supports throughout the year. You, the gentle wing of “the butterfly” can eventually cause a ripple-effect of warm feeling of our heritage and culture among us and many others.

A big “Thank You,” to our major event sponsors for their generous supports: Al and Petra Lowe of Al Lowe Construction, Inc. of Oxnard; Keith and Cindy Kwan of Chester’s Asia Restaurant of Camarillo; Regional Manager George Leong and Branch Manager Dr. Lawrence Lee of DCH Lexus of Oxnard; Paul and Hsiu-Ling Lu of Camarillo Inn of The Best Western Inn. Of course we are very thankful for the contributions made by all our other many more business and professional advertisers in our website, newsletter and cultural night program throughout the year.

A big “Thank You” to the people who helped make the major events possible: Dr. George Yu and the Historical Society; Judge Kee Choo Ling and Camarillo Kung Fu Club; Ray Chong, Lee-May Little, Irene Sy of the Language School and the Youth Group; Edna Tanita, Alice Ginn and LaRaine Kang, Sharon Mac Polin, Lesley Ling, Steve and Sylvia Shih; Tony Chen, Tim Fu, Dolly and Leon Lee; Leslie Jue and family; Harry Lee, Sean Gao, Barbara Chieu and Rob Heilman.

A new Board for 2004-05 is being developed and we welcome your participation. Please step-up to the plate for our Association for the coming year. Let us bring our Association to a higher level of service to our members and the local community and to a higher level of pride and self-satisfaction of our heritage and culture.

The motto of our Association is: “We Build Cultural Bridges.” In this deeply troubled world there are many bridges in need of being built. Let it begin with us.

I wish you a good and safe summer! Stella and I thank you for allowing me to be your president for the last two wonderful years.

Easter Egg Hunt

On a lovely spring Sat. morning, April 3, 2004, over 100 members, families and friends participated in the second annual Easter Extravaganza at the Ling’s Ranch in Somis. Festivities included a tri-tip and chicken barbecue, carnival games, face painting, tattoos, balloon animals, Easter chicks and, of course, an Easter egg hunt!

Thank you to all who made this event a fun-filled success! Thanks to our hosts, Stella and Hillary Ling. Thanks to Lesley Ling for overseeing the event, to Edna and Karissa Tanita, LaRaine Kang, Sharon MacPolin and Alice Ginn for organizing games and to Suzie and Leslie Jue and their gang for providing REALLY GOOD food. VCCAA Historical Society

The Historical Society has finished production of the documentary “Courage and Contribution: The Chinese in Ventura County.” The documentary is an hour-long feature directed by George Sandoval of WestEnd Production. An excerpt from the film was well received by the audience at the 2004 Chinese Cultural Night event at the Pacifica High School in Oxnard. The documentary chronicles the history of the early Chinese settlers in Ventura from the 1860s to the present day. The film also covers the anti-Chinese movement in the late 1800s and the story of William Soo Hoo, an Oxnard native, who was elected as mayor in the 1960s. It presents the research of Linda Bentz, our historian, on the pioneer Chinese families in Ventura and Oxnard. Our goal is to provide a copy of the documentary free of charge to every public school in Ventura County for use in their curriculum on immigration history.

The documentary will premiere at 7 pm on Sat., May 15, 2004 at the Rockwell Scientific Company Auditorium (1049 Camino Dos Rios, Thousand Oaks). This exciting event is by invitation only since seating at the auditorium is limited. If you would like to attend this premiere, please email your request and mailing address to or contact S.K. Leong at 805-484-4210.

We are working with the City of Ventura on the China Alley Memorial. The Memorial will be a painted mural on a wall along the Figueroa Walkway. The artists, Qi Pang and Guo Song Yuan, will need at least four weeks to complete the mural. Please visit our website at to see a drawing of the Memorial. This is the first memorial in Ventura County dedicated to the legacy of the early Chinese immigrants. This event has received considerable coverage in the Chinese language newspapers in Los Angeles Chinatown and Monterey Park. We shall keep you updated on our progress.

The Ventura County Museum of History and Art (VCMHA; 100 E. Main St., Ventura) will hold a summer exhibit of paintings by Qi Pang to commemorate the historic Ventura China Alley and the new Memorial. Mr. Qi Pang based his paintings on images found in the VCMHA collection, the Santa Barbara Historical Society collection, the Oxnard library and the National Archives.

If you like to support our documentary or China Alley Memorial projects, please send your tax-deductible donation to the VCCAA (P.O. Box 806, Camarillo, CA 93011-0806) earmarked for the Historical Society or contact us via our email address at

S.K. Leong

Chinese Language School

On Sat., March 13, 2004, the Chinese Language School took a field trip to the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles Chinatown (425 N. Los Angeles St.). A total of 33 students and parents participated. We were lucky to have Mr. Albert Lew explain to us in person how his family, who lived in the original 19th century general store on the site of the present museum, provided local Chinese families with everything from food to general supplies to medicine, as well as providing mail service to hometowns in China.

The students saw a tiny room with a wooden bed, the medicine room containing many drawers of herbal medications, and many pictures of Chinatown from the mid 1800s to modern times. I am sure that the students learned a lot about the earlier Chinese immigration to this country.

The highlight of the trip was an authentic Chinese lunch and shopping in Chinatown. A big “Thank You” to all of the people who helped by providing transportation.

Our annual speech contest will be held on Fri., May 14, 7-9 PM, at Monte Vista Intermediate School (888 Lantana St., Camarillo).  Everyone is welcome to come see our students’ great achievements this school year.

There is a need for new teachers for the coming school year, starting in September 2004. We need help from our members to find qualified candidates. If you know of someone who is very familiar with the Pin Ying system and who is willing to devote two hours per week each Friday night, please either refer them to me or contact Lee May Little at (805) 484-5222.

We are attempting to determine whether there is enough interest to hold a summer school for the kids again this year. If you are interested in attending, please let Irene Sy know as soon as possible. Contact Irene at 482-4765.
